Guys,

Thank you very much for the continuous support. To those who made it, I hope you guys enjoyed the event (and the food).  It has been a long day but I must admit that I am very happy that everything went well this time round (no technical glitches!). Thanks again for everything. Your support means a lot not just to me but to the entire Tune Money team.

To my friends who did not make it, I hope you make it up to me by applying for a TUNE CARD :) and here’s the speech….

Hello and welcome everyone. Thank you for making the time to be with us this afternoon. I am very happy to see so many of you here today for the long-awaited launch of our Tune Card.

Firstly I would like to thank Datuk Dr. Awang Adek, Deputy Minister of Finance II. I was in Dubai when I called Datuk Awang who was busy on a working visit in London. I believe he was at Harrod’s at the time. After kindly agreeing to launch our prepaid card, he asked me, what is Tune Money? So much for having my picture on all these buses in the Klang Valley. But then, Dr Awang is not our target market. Anyway Dr Awang, thanks again for making the time to be with us today.

We received so many inquiries about our card that all I can say is, you guys seem to be as excited as we are about this product. Well, thank you for your patience and I am happy and proud to say that your long wait is over. The Tune Card is now available, which means you can go to the Tune Money website, click “apply now” and just fill in the details. You should be able to collect your card in a week or so. And remember: no employment checks, no credit checks, no minimum salary requirement. Anyone can apply!

Over the next three months we will be adding features to the card such as card-to-card transfers, transportation and bill payments, mobile reloads as well as a loyalty programme giving you more of what you really want. And come February we will see the launch of the Celcom-Tune Card which will allow mobile banking. It just gets better and better. As we have said so often before; no frills doesn’t mean you get less. Only that you pay less. What we’re going to be giving you is state-of-the-art. Our product will make the convenience of a personalised digital form of payment available to the man-on-the-street, especially those who do not qualify for a credit card.

But we think our offering is so compelling that it will appeal even to those who do qualify for a credit card but are sick of forking out exorbitant fees, financing charges and late charges.

In addition, you will be able to track your balance as well as your transaction history online. So Dato Seri Shazalli, you may not want your wife to give you a Tune Card as an anniversary present because she’ll be able to keep tabs on you (THIS IS A JOKE). Sorry I have to mention you Shazalli, but Tony would never give anyone a supplementary card, prepaid or otherwise. Anyway coming back to tracking your balance online, this way, you will be able to see exactly where your money goes, which will allow you to create a budget. As you can see at Tune Money we’re all about fulfilling the real needs of real people. And real people need to budget their income.

I can safely say that it costs almost nothing to use the card. Our fee, which is only RM9.99 a year, is as low as it can go. Making a digital payment has never been so affordable. And if you use your card overseas, we charge you the lowest exchange rate markup in the market. If you don’t believe me, try using our card overseas and check it out.

Any which way you look at it, this card is the real deal. You are going to be getting so much for so little and we will keep adding on the benefits. We believe the man-on-the-street, who has been neglected by the banks, does not only deserve an equivalent product. He or she, deserves something better. Much better. And at prices they can afford

At the moment, a significant proportion of the Malaysian working population do not carry a credit card, either because they earn less than RM1,500 and don’t qualify for one or because they’re afraid of the credit card death spiral (that’s death spelled D.E.B.T.) that happens when you fail to settle your credit card bills at the end of the month. If you’ve been through it, you can relate. First there are the financing charges, then you miss a few payments, and you add late charges to that, and suddenly your molehill of debt has become a mountain.

With the Tune Card, all this is taken care of. Firstly, it’s prepaid, which means there are no credit checks, employment checks or minimum salary requirements. You can apply for it whether you’re a Puan Sri or a Minah Kilang. You only need to ensure you maintain a minimum balance of RM10 on the card, and as for the rest, you’re free to spend it.

This means you no longer have to borrow your friend’s credit card to book your AirAsia ticket or wait in that long line at the cinema to get your ticket for the film “CUCI”. You can do everything online with your own card.

Don’t you think you think this is cool? We do. And when you’re shopping, you no longer have to carry loads of cash. You can put it all on the Tune Card.

As you know the Internet is only just taking off as a distribution channel in Malaysia. Not everyone is able to buy things on the internet because not everyone has a means of digital payment. However, with all the efficiencies it offers, merchants are able to sell products and services for significantly less than they charge at their traditional distribution channels.

So isn’t it ironic that those who most need the savings have no access to them because they do not qualify for a credit card? What our card does is to open up e-commerce so that all sections of society may enjoy the benefits, not just the few and fortunate

As the card bears the Visa mark, it is accepted globally, at any merchant that accepts Visa. Unlike the debit card which is only accepted at selected merchants. And you can use it to withdraw money from any ATM that bears the Visa mark.

And as the Tune Card is personalised, with your name nicely laser-embossed, no one can tell the difference between it and a credit card so you don’t get treated differently. Another first for Tune Money.

We have worked out a variety of convenient reload channels. If you have a local bank account, just register for an internet account and you can top up your card via FPX. If not, you can always do it at Pos Malaysia, Bank Simpanan Nasional or CIMB bank branches. And we are working on more top-up channels as we speak.

All in all, we’ve done everything to ensure that getting our card, using it and topping it up is as painless as possible.

I would like to thank Visa International for taking this chance on us. VISA was willing to talk to us when the Tune Card was no more than a twinkle in Tony’s eye. I would especially like to record my thanks to VISA International’s Executive Vice President for South & Southeast Asia Mr James Murray and the former Country Manager for Malaysia Mr Jeff Perera and the present Country Manager Jessica Pang, all of whom have been incredibly supportive of the process from the outset and responsible for pushing through our membership so quickly.

I’d also like to thank ACI International and LogicaCMG for their support. Last but not least, I’d like to thank the Tune Money team – Kanesh, Kumar, Basil, Dhashini, Chandrika, Nadia and everyone in the cards team for all the blood, sweat and tears that went into making this day possible. Good job guys! And I would also like to thank our amazing marketing and IT teams who broke their backs trying to get everything just right. You make us proud.

Lastly I want to say that at Tune Money we believe that everyone has a right to participate in the Malaysian dream. It doesn’t matter who you are or where you start out from. You can always build a better tomorrow. And we would love to be part of your journey.

Thank you.

Great event. Somehow, this one represented Tune M better than the last one. A little less formal and a lot more fun. Jien was a good choice and the gambits were perfect. Food was yummy. Location was breathtaking. You were… (slightly) if only a tad better looking than you were at the previous launch :P so yeah. Perfect. :) Congratulations… and Unit Trust makes 3… can’t wait…

    Zafrul,
In my opinion,if one person is discipline enough to charge the credit card necessarily and always putting in mind that credit card is not a tool to facilitate the payment (instead of bringing cash) and not a luxury, it is ok to stick with credit card. My credit card company is not making money as hardly late payment charge they can imposed and better still I get to reimburse the points in exchange to something (rather than nothing), and nowadays credit card also has a free for life concept (no yearly fees required).

But, going overseas is so painful as the credit card is charging the currency exchange markup a bit higher up. This is where I think a TM card comes handy (hopefully what TZ claimed is true - that the rate is lower). Other than this,I guess my wallet will still carry the credit card..

For target group of ppl who have been living without credit card (credit card was not approved due to some reasons), pity them to pay the fees (is it RM10? is the fees yearly or what?)just to make a payment on things that they have been used to pay cash… just hope that this prepaid card not making them to spend more than before hence causing them to postpone some other bills…

Hope TM is doing a social responsibility to help ppl in (let me quote) “the spiral death (spelled DEBT)” to “control” the expenditure (?) provided no credit card at all allowed in their possession.

    Hi,

I believe I found a typo and an omission:

“At the moment, a significant proportionon of the Malaysian working population carry a credit card …”

I think you meant to say:

“At the moment, a significant proportion of the Malaysian working population do not carry a credit card …”

    Hi TZ,

Delighted as always to see a successful liverpool die hard successful. Hope your Tune Card do well. But in all honesty, I have my doubts about Tune Card unique value proposition as a card user. There are already many existing prepaid cards by banks, freedom card (MOLAccess) and even MEPSCash. Whatever all the best.

I am one of many who have applied and successfully recieved a Tune Money card.
However do you realise that telephone support is non existant although advertised at the website.
Email support is also abandoned as enquiries are bounced straight back.
Me and my friends have loaded our cards to the max and balance is not showing at the website and we are unable to use our cards after many days activation.
If you are the CEO of Tune Money you should know that this is not good and will soon lead to bad feedback.
